Defining the Gram Stain

The Gram Staining method is a technique through which bacterial species are differentiated into two broad categories, entitled the Gram-positive and Gram-negative. The method is based upon the chemical and physical properties of their cell walls (Pommerville, 2006).

These bacterial species are being differentiated on the basis of their distinct colors: the Gram-positive cells are usually in colors of purple or blue while the Gram-negative cells are in colors of pink/red color (Pommerville, 2006).
