The Headstart Program

The Government established the Program Head Start in 1995 to contribute to the development of Indian children, Métis and Inuit living in urban centers and large northern communities and prepare at school. In October 1998 the program was open to First Nations communities on reserves. This opening resulted from commitments made as part of Gathering Strength: Canada's Action Plan for Indigenous Issues, Building Our Future Together and the Throne Speech of September 1997.
