Introduction

Whether to attend college or not has acquired the status of a statement which is frequently debated among individuals and various societies, including the United States of America. In essence, two sides of the argument have propped up, with one side supporting individuals to attend college while others tend to cite Charles Murray's argument that an increasing number of students attending college lack the necessary cognitive abilities and other auxiliary attributes which is usually required for success at higher levels of learning (Light & Strayer 2000).

This paper aims to discuss why it is important for every student to pursue higher education, as well as discuss the preconceived notion that if more people attend college, a B.A. degree will experience changes in its attached value.

The Importance of College for Every Student

Despite the importance of higher education and the association of status and income to education levels, research shows that very few individuals pursue higher education after high school. A significant contribution towards this decline is the absence of subsidized or government support for higher education in contrast to the primary and secondary education. This often leaves students and their parents to deal with the burgeoning expenditures of college tuition fee, and as a result of the debt issue, most of the high school graduates decline to seek admission in colleges. This trend is clearly evident in a recent report submitted to Congress by the Advisory Committee on Student Financial Assistance (Advisory Committee on Student Financial Assistance 2010).
