Introduction

The organized crime in Italy has been in existence for more than hundred years. It not only involves the common criminal activities but it has made a significant impact on the government, political and the judiciary system of the country. The mafia in Italy is one of the most disreputable and widespread of all criminal activities. The mafia is best known for its activities such as extortion and running a protection racket. However, nowadays mafia has increased to a more diversified and sophisticated level of criminal activities causing numerous issues in the country. (Paoli 17) Few of them include kidnapping of kids and adults, drug dealing and its smuggling, bribery of judges and trafficking of people. Each mafia has its own language to communicate with the other members of the group. (Paoli 17) The paper provides a brief history of the Italian mafia followed by its purpose and beginnings. Also, a concise preface to the most well-known mafia groups in Italy is included in the paper.

Discussion

History

The Italian Mafia has been observed as the prototype of organized crime in the United States since the days of Prohibition. In its native state; however, there has never been such a consensus, and many different happenings have been labeled as a “mafia” ever since the term became famous immediately following Italy's unification in the latter part of the 19th century. (Galeotti 35)

The history shows that the criminal groups were involved in different criminal activities ranging from a minor snatching to the killing of the most famous personalities of the country.

This does not mean, however, that the Mafia exists only in Italy. Nor does it mean that all organized crimes by Italians in the United States and the other countries are masterminded in Sicily. The fact is that the similar structures and systems have also been developed in America, in response to American social conditions. Also, the province of Italians is not limited to United States, but it's also moving to Asian, black and Hispanic groups. (Galeotti 35)

There has been a long debate on the existence of the Italian mafia, although there has been consensus that the mafia evolved from the different regions of the country. Secret groups of mafia began to evolve during the end of the 19th century, which were formed on the basis of ethnic groups. Some of the most famous mafia groups of Italy are discussed below:
