The Second World War

Introduction

World War II was an armed conflict on a global scale, which lasted from September 1939 to September 1945. The war involved the majority of the world's nations, including all major powers, arranged in two opposing military alliances: the Allies and the Axis Powers. It was the greatest war in history, with over 100 million soldiers mobilized and a state of “total war” in which the major contenders spent all their economic, military and scientific effort in the service of arms, erasing the distinction between resources civilian and military. Marked by events of great significance that included the mass killing of civilians, the Holocaust and the use of first and last time of nuclear weapons in a military conflict, the Second World War was the deadliest conflict in human history. This assignment is based on identifying the economic, strategic and technological factors that led to U.S. victory in the World War II (Tucker & Roberts, pp. 320).

The era of post-World War II brought a complete transformation to the political landscape of Europe. The people left unaided, and the only way they could found for their revival was through a despotic ruler who could use force to impose nationalism and use absolute power to uplift the economy. Hence the conditions of the continent became favorable for dictatorship. Leaders, dictators emerged to reflect and represent the people and share their agony. Their vision and dreams appealed the masses and gave them hope of future. It was this attraction that led to deepen the roots of dictatorship in Europe after the World War (Michael 2009, 120).

The Second World War was the second in the global level led war of all major powers of the 20th Century and is the largest and costliest conflict in human history ever. It was the only war in which both atomic (from the U.S. to Japan), as well as biological and chemical weapons (both mainly from Japan to China) used. Apart from major death history of the Second World War, it also brought changes to the economies of different countries (O'Brien 2007, 50).
