The Sport of Floor Hockey

Introduction

Floor Hockey originally started as a different ice hockey, which could be played on streets. Mark poruchny invented floor hockey.

Discussion

The first floor hockey games to be introduced under a program were played by school children in Battle Creek, Michigan, in 1962. As floor hockey developed, rules were kept simple to encourage maximum activity, continuous play, and safety. (McKinley 25) Floor Hockey is adapted from the games of ice hockey and ringette. It is the only team sport in Special Olympics Winter Sports. Unlike Alpine or cross country skiing, Special Olympics Floor Hockey gives athletes who live in warm climates the opportunity to compete in Special Olympics Winter Sports.

Floor Hockey is played in a rink, but the surface is made of wood or concrete, not ice. The teams are composed of six players, including a goalie. (McFarlane 45)The athletes use wooden poles (without blades) as the sticks and the pucks are large felt discs with an open center. While team goals appear to have great importance for team sports, the reality is that most team goals can be broken down into individual roles or responsibilities. Each player must achieve these individual roles or responsibilities for the team to function effectively.

There's no doubt that floor hockey is one of the most popular games around, in large part because it's a fast-paced, exciting sport that can be enjoyed by people of all ages and skill levels. Another reason that floor hockey is so popular is that it's very accessible. Unlike many other sports, you don't have to spend thousands of dollars on very expensive equipment in order to play competitively. (Falla 41) In fact, you can often get top-of-the-line equipment for much less than you think, especially if you shop on the web.
