Introduction

The Things They Carried” by Tim O'Brien deals with the responsibility, remorse, and the isolation and loneliness soldiers went through the war of Vietnam, chiefly due to the emotional immaturity of the soldiers. While they all carry heavy physical loads, they also all carry heavy emotional loads, composed of grief, terror, love, and longing.

The “things that they carried” were based on the necessity. Among the necessities, or almost a necessity included can openers and pocket knives.
