Introduction

The movie “The WITS” was released in 2001, starring Emma Thompson, Christopher Lloyd and a few others. In the movie a hospital environment is highlighted and the life of a patient is shown. The plot of the movie revolves around a patient who is a known professor but finds out that it is suffering from a Stage 4 ovarian cancer. This movie was considered as the best works of Emma Thompson. This movie is an emotional drama. The patient is shown to be of an arrogant nature that does not care much about the emotions of the people. The patient is of a very professional nature and does not care about any other thing than her profession. This movie was considered to be one of the greatest works of its time. It touched the hearts of many people and portrayed the values and the moral and ethical responsibilities of a staff of a doctor. It also portrays an element of hope in the daily lives of average individuals as well the perception towards life of the patients suffering from various diseases. Furthermore, the treatment of the hospital staff to the patient as well as their approach is shown to be unethical when they least care about providing hope and do not refrain from reflecting the obvious outcome of the disease, that is considered to be death.

Discussion

The idea of the movie was adopted from a play, which was written by Margaret Edson. This book discussed the personal story of a professional professor as well as her experiences where she suffered an illness and the thought as well as the learning process she went through. The patient was shown to have learned to great deal about the profession and difference of experiences of a doctor and a patient. The plot of the movie reflects the actor known as Emma Thompson playing a successful but arrogant professor. She is shown to constantly remember her life prior to the disease and how she had been treating all the people around her and even showed signs of over confidence.

The theme of the movie revolves around a successful individual in the field of poetry believing that there is no need for emotions in her field. However, with the passage of time this person, who is a professor named Vivian suffers a disease in which she suffers from continuous fever, chills, abdominal pain as well as vomiting at regular intervals. Vivian is diagnosed to have Grade four ovarian cancer. The theme reflects the realization of a person when she herself becomes a patient. The realization is focused on the feelings of the patients and her experience allows her to encounter different personalities and their thought processes. Vivian is shown to suffer the taste of her own medicine when she is treated as a lost cause and the approach of the staff of the hospital though indirectly but clearly portrays these feelings to her.
