In this essay, the history of the world is being reflected from the book The Worlds Together, The Worlds Apart. From World War I to Globalization, the scenarios and the changes can be seen. Author defines World War I as a true global conflict as it spans from Europe to Turkey to Africa. Most of the countries become enchanted with European colonial beliefs of freedom and self-rule. At the end of World War II, the power of dominating regions started to loosen up and the concept of building nation arises. (Wright, 2004)

The Quest for the Modern

In the era of 20s and 30s, the concept of modernity arises. With the arrival of modernity, mass production, mass consumption and mass culture started to become dominant. The visions of modernity included: Liberalism, authoritarianism and anti colonialism. (Gombrich, 2005) However, modernity needed freedom. To practice the approaches which are being recognized by the nations, independence was a must.

The Great War

The war proved to be the reason for destruction of European titles to civilized superiority. The powers were being shifted. The killing of Archduke Francis Ferdinand of Austria was the initiative. The feeling of excitation about the war whittled down as advancements in defensive tools overcame offensive capacities and the war became a struggle for contrition. Mass mobilizations counteracted conventional gender norms. (Wright, 2004)

The Versailles Peace Conference damned Germany for the war and demanded firm compensations. Early Ottoman territories came down to France and Britain. Women appeared out taking new perquisites.

Mass Society: Culture, Production, and Consumption

The culture adopted was change from the culture of elite and thus attracted middle class and working class. It matched their likings. Thus, it becomes the culture of the nation. The demands were great at the time of war and hence industry expands to meet the demands. The production of goods was honed. United States becomes to rise as a model of mass consumption after World War II. (Gombrich, 2005)

Mass Politics: Contending Visions for Building Advanced States

For numerous individuals, World War I ruined the big ambition of technical progress, free markets, and authorities by the educated few. People who sacrificed for their nation become demanding for a bigger share of the political and economic gains. Socialism disseminate while revolution menaced colonial empires. Most of the progressive regimes failed in the wave of the Great Depression. Other changed them to authoritarian development of the state. However, the Great Depression altered the practices of American politics.

Stalin succeeded Lenin and started to build socialism. With the dictatorship of Stalin, the system became autocratic. Japan prospered during World War I and altered into a creditor nation from debtor nation. The development in economics amazed critiques. (Parker, 1997)
