Introduction

Trade unions are basically a group or organization of workers or labours who get together to achieve a certain common objective. They come together for common goals such as securing the integrity of their work and trade, getting paid according to their work done, hiring number of employees and employer for effective organizational performance and increase the betterment of the working conditions. The members of the union devise certain policies that protect the rights of the union members who are mostly the employees of different companies of a country or an industry. The plans or policies are made with the consent of the stakeholders and the union members who are actively involved in the union (Addison & Schnabel, 2003).

The trade unions specifically cater to the need of trade and transactional processes of the companies and help in protecting and increasing the morale of the employees and employers of the industry and union members. Several issues present in the companies related to the trade and human resource management problems can be solved through the presence of trade unions. The modern labour market can be illustrated with the formation and functioning of the trade unions. The trade unions are confronted with competition in the labour market and some other institutions and authorities presenting the state (Addison & Schnabel, 2003).

Trade unions play an important role in the political and economical environment of a country. Over the decade it has also gained some academic importance. However, this paper discuses the impact of trade unions on the performance of the firms and the role of employers in dealing with the trade unions.

The trade unions have gained significant importance in the political and economical development of the country. The academic interest in the trade unions and their behaviours is still an unexplored area or a little has been explored in this area. By the end of 1970s, there was a short survey of the trade union authorities and institutions related to the economic analysis. According to this survey it was identified that the study of the effects and the behaviours of the trade unions is one of the important area but there has been a very little research on this subject. However, the identification of this issue raised the importance of this profession and the trade union industries all over the world specifically in the United Kingdom (Fernie & Metcalf, 2005). By the end of 1980s, there was a significant research work examined in the union trade industry. Several researchers worked for the identification and analysis of the impact of trade unions. The key areas identified by the researchers related to the union literature and the behaviour of the trade unions can be associated with the areas of political science, industrial relations, labour economics and industrial economics.
