Uncertainty/ambiguity in context of online dating

Introduction

Dan Ariley examines the dating sites as electronic markets and trader behavior and market outcomes are being studied. According to him the global dating has growing increasingly including the online dating, speed dating, casual dating, traditional dating and so on. The people dating research is likely to be contacted through online dating than others on the basis of their physical and social status. Now the Internet is becoming a mainstream way for people to connect with others who want to date (Baron 2008). A study done by Connolly and Taradash (2000) found that: 38% of adult dating relationships are started at work or school, 34% meet through family or friends, 13% at nightclubs, bars, cafes, or social gatherings, 2% at church, 1% by chance, 1% at the gym, 1% through a blind date, and 10% through the Internet. The challenges and advantages of online dating are a pressing concern for today's growing single population.

Online dating research has typically taken two approaches: studies that analyze online personal ads, and studies that compare interacting online to other romantic interactions. Connolly and Taradash (2000) state that most relational research shows a bias for face-to-face interactions and relationships, and that there is a need to conceptualize a different way of looking at online relationships in light of this bias. The assumption is that online dating is different and outside the “normal” means of meeting people. This assumption implies that if someone turns to online dating services, they have probably done so only after failing at other, more traditional means of finding a mate.

Individuals can speed up their relationships or slow them down by choosing how quickly they respond to emails, or when they make a decision to send pictures or initiate phone calls or first dates (Nyshadham and Ping 2011). Online dating used to be considered a last resort method for finding other people who might be interested in forming romantic relationships. This study seeks to shed some light on the experience of online dating, and in particular the lived experience of an Internet generated dating relationship.
