Dissertation Topic and Problem Addressed

The topic chosen for this doctoral dissertation study is The Underrepresentation of African American Males in middle school college readiness programs. The issues that led to the need of this study are continuous problems regarding the underrepresentation of African American males, specifically in middle school readiness programs. Further, this study shall focus on the causes of the problems and that how it can be overcome.

However, the evidence of the problem can be traced in several researches. A report was submitted to the Centre for improvement of Study Learning by Bailey, M. and Dziko, T. (2008). This report specifically addressed the problem that in modern schools success for African Americans is too often elusive. The community is still facing a long history of issues of racism and this is why our education system has very low expectations from African American children in middle schools. There is no adequate response yet to form a remedy for this situation.

Moreover, this study also addresses the gap in the existing literature. There is very less evidence found regarding the middle school readiness programs for African American males. Although, many researchers have examined high schools and primary schools programs but very insignificant number of times, analysts have attempted to focus middle school. Thus, this study shall bridge the gap.

Dissertation Purpose and Alignment with Problem

The purpose of the dissertation study is to examine the problem of underrepresentation of African American boys in middle school, further it also poses potential issues that may arise.
