Introduction

The land force that fought in the American Civil War for the Union was termed as the Union Army. It was termed as the U.S. Army, the Federal Army, the National Army and the Northern Army as well. The small Army of United States i.e. the regular army along with the considerable numbers of units rendered by the Northern states, consisted of volunteers in addition to conscripts. The smaller Confederate States Army was fought by the Union Army that ultimately defeated in the war which held out from 1861 to 1865. There were about 360,000 casualties of Union Army from all causes; while some 280,000 wounded during the war. This paper is intended to discuss the role of Union Army in the American Civil War. Decisive victories by Union Army, African Americans in the Union Army, advantages of Northern side over southern side, health related issues and strategic matters faced by Union Army in the war will be elaborated in this paper.

The Civil War

The American Civil War, also referred to as the War Between the States, was waged from 1861 to 1865 between factions comprised of the northern and southern states. Although typically associated with the institution of slavery, the war was the culmination of decades of regional disagreements over ideological, political, social, diplomatic, and economic issues, which dated back to the founding of the nation. The road to war was lengthy, paved with numerous debates and compromises in which leaders from both sides attempted to resolve issues, if only on a temporary basis.

Causes of Civil War

The main causes were a conflict between economic and social patterns. The southern part of the economy depends heavily on cotton and slavery while the northern part was more inclined to industry rather than agriculture. This disparity between the two set up a significant difference in economic attitudes. The battle between Slave and Non-Slave proponents was the second cause of civil war. As America expanded, new states admitted to the union and the question of whether would be slave or free arises, would allow the states to use popular sovereignty to determine whether they would be free or slaved.
