Volunteer Personal Experience

Introduction

The objective of this report is to sum up my personal experiences from the community service that I participated in . It is almost an impossible task to put into words the affect that the activities that I have participated with has had on my family and I. Currently, I am employed with the Department of Human Services working to assist our communities neediest members with assistance with food stamp and Medicaid benefits. My current employment has opened my eyes to the need that we have right here in our own backyard. We have children who go to bed hungry every night. We have elderly who make decisions between medication to sustain living or food to stave off hunger.

We made quick introductions and sprang into action. My first task was to wash a 30 gallon Rubbermaid tote of lettuce that had been locally grown and donated to the soup kitchen by a local farmer. Washing and cleaning the lettuce should have been a mindless task but I found myself thinking about the local farmer who had harvested his crop of lettuce and thought to himself that he should share his bounty with the less fortunate at the Soup kitchen. After the lettuce was washed and spun dry, I prepared a huge fresh salad and was overwhelmed with a feeling of humility thinking that my higher power had directed me in this direction to teach me that I can do more for my fellow citizens. The kitchen was buzzing with activities all morning. Local business were donating products and food items to be passed on to those who needed those items.
