Abstract

In this study we try to explore the concept of “Production and Operations Management at Wal-Mart” in a holistic context. The main focus of the research is on “Wal-Mart” and its relation with “operations and production management”. The research also analyzes many aspects of “team work at Wal-Mart, it Crisis handling abilities and Global presence of Wal-Mart”. Finally the research gives recommendations for effective supply chain management at Wal-Mart.

Introduction

Wal-Mart is the largest retailer of the world. In fact, it can be said that it is the largest corporation on the planet. In the year the annual sales of the Wal-Mart exceeded a staggering $200 billion, and at that time analyst predicted that this figure will rise to $700 billion in the year 2010. The company was first founded by Sam Walton in the year 1962, and incorporated in the year, 1969. The basic reason behind the success story of Wal-Mart in the United States of America was the philosophy of “consumerism” which prevails in the United States as people here buy things in a bulk quantity (Nelson, 2006).

In this research, I am going to five the brief description of the company's nature of business, Market Share, Financial Size and Global Presence. I will also the company's operations and production management and its ability to work in teams. Moreover, I will discusss Wal-mart's ability to deal with crisis.

Type of Business

Wal-Mart is the world's largest grocery chain and retailer, in terms of its sales volume. Wal-Mart's sales are 50 percent greater than its competitors. The main reason behind its success are its bulk Purchases at the discounted prices. Its major supplier is China, and doe to low-price high quality goods, the products of China has given competition to the most selling brands of America. The size and buying power f Wal-Mart is must greater than its competitors, which gives a competitive edge to Wal-Mart. Therefore,

Market Share

The market share of Wal-Mart is larger than its competitors. Its major competitors are Target, Sears, Macy's, JCPenny, Tiger, Kmart, ShopKo and many others. Wal-Mart's mission is to save people's money so that they can live better. As a result of this strategy, it has designed comprehensive supply chain network, duo to which none of its competitors are able to snatch its market share (Stock-Analysis-On-Act, 2011).

Financial Size

The financial progress and position of Wal-Mart is unbeatable. Its net sales are $ 418,952 billion, and its profits are $ 103,665 billion. By, Jan 31, 2011, the year-end cash equivalent of the company was $ 7395 million (Stock-Analysis-On-Act, 2011)..
