War Poetry

Introduction

War is a period of conflict or fighting between two states. A war is not just a period of bloodshed and quarrel, but it has a deep impact on people's emotions. Since war has been a part of the history of humankind, people from time to time have tried capturing the essence of war into movies, paintings, books, poetry as well as music so that they could express their emotions on war. In this paper, we are going to talk about war poetry with particular emphasis on the First World War.

War poetry is an attempt by the poet to captivate the metamorphosis that a common man goes through from being a lover of peace and tranquility to becoming a proponent of destruction and butchery—that is war. Some of the poets even lost their lives later on during war. These names include Wilfred Owen and Rupert Brooke.

But poetry about war has been in existence for a very long time. Homer's Iliad has strong claims to be called a war poem, and literature ...
