What is AIDS?

AIDS is an abbreviation which stands for Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome. This happens when a person's immune system gets too weak to fight off infections. AIDS is mainly caused by HIV. HIV is Human Immunodeficiency Virus. HIV attacks the immune system gradually and damages the cells. The body becomes accustomed to infections which can't fight off them anymore. AIDS is an incurable disease. The only cure against AIDS is to prevent oneself from HIV infection and to be aware about the transmission of HIV. HIV is preventive. One can take antiretroviral drugs to delay the damaging within the body. First case of AIDS was discovered in 1981. Till date, more than 25 million people have died from AIDS (Omari 2004, 61).

How to go about AIDS?

Through the treatment of antiretroviral treatment one can prolong the time moving towards HIV to AIDS. Still people suffer from AIDS because in many developing or poor countries, the treatment is not widely available. Many people aren't tested for HIV and therefore AIDS develops. It also happens that the side effects become intolerable for the patients. With many patients only home care is provided and emotional support lacks. Full time care and support and love should be shown to the patient to support him/her morally and emotionally get cope with the disease mentally and physically. Over twenty-five million people are infected with HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) in Sub- Saharan Africa, accounting for almost two thirds of cases worldwide. AIDS has become the biggest killer in Africa, responsible for over 20% of all deaths on the continent.
