What's Next for Kindle?

Introduction

Amazon is the largest online book store in the world. It developed its unique competitive advantage by providing access of the wider selection of books online, then possible in physical store. This business model outsmarted its then rival “Barns & Nobles”, which was the largest book seller in the United States. Amazon's competitive advantage of online retailing and providing more collection of books then its competitor provided a rapid success. The advancement and integration of supply chain, developing warehouses around the world, integrating major logistic service providers like DHL, strengthened the competitive advantage of the Amazon. The company has made numerous developments in information technology and has been instrumental in pioneering Cloud Base Computing. One of the innovative products by Amazon is the electronic reader device, Kindle. It's a tablet touch screen device with the primary function of providing e-books for reading. It has met with extreme success and with increased competition from other tablet and touch screen cell phone makers, the future of Kindle is becoming uncertain.

Background

The electronic book reader, Kindle, was launched in 2007 and later the company introduced the larger screen product in 2009. The product has been refined over the years and now includes keyboard and another low cost version with on-screen keyboard. The product was primarily made for enhancing the reading experience, availability of books electronically and to enable the readers to share the books. The latest model “Kindle Fire” is based on the popular operating system of Android, has a color display, includes a reader application in a tablet computer.

The company is facing tough competition from tablet makers like Apple's Ipad, Barn & Noble's Nook and other tablet computer companies (Investor's Business, 2012). The advancement in cell phones, equipped with large screens and high end processors are also giving Kindle a strong wind. The company offers access to music, videos, books, news, journals and applications through its device. It also offers an email client which can be used to obtain emails from hotmail, yahoo, Gmail etc.

The survival of Kindle is under threat due to its limited applications as compared to wider Android market. Amazon has made this product for providing e-reading services as well as entertainment through its newly introduced color display. The product lacks the versatility in I-Pad and the products like SAMSUNG note. It doesn't allow other programs then developed by Amazon to avoid hacking of devices and books. This has put a limitation on the use of the tablet and mars the future of the kindle device. The company offers paid applications for viewing and editing Office documents as well as other applications. As compared to the popular Android platform, the program writers for Amazon are much less which is also a concern for the company. The company is currently offering Kindle at very aggressive prices which can be matched by any other competitor in future.
