SECTION 1

Introduction

When beginning this project, I was very excited to be granted an opportunity where I would be carrying out a research in my interest related to social psychology. I had to choose a single idea that interested me most and was related to social psychology. Even though I had several ideas, still I am supposed to choose one which would help me achieve good results as well be interesting to me.

I started off by brainstorming for project ideas (see appendix 2). There were several ideas which I had in mind but there was one that always interested me, “why Pakistanis tend to fall back in education.” I could never understand the reason for this, was it the upbringing of the children? Was there culture, beliefs, peer pressure or any other social conflicts that were responsible for it? I am mainly interested in why Pakistani individuals don't tend to do well or go into further education. Is it due to the fact that the children have no strong attachments towards education, was it due to pressures, or is it cultural or generally the individual influence which has created a negative attitude towards education.

Nowadays, education is the intergral factor which is responsible for securing jobs for individuals. Being a Pakistani myself I have found it hard due to my own circumstances and I have also found people from my own background and issues as they were either restricted from pursuing further education, or some individuals who had lost the positive attitude towards education due to their social influence and have fallen behind. The best way for me to find out exactly why Pakistanis are lacking or not even going further into education is by carrying out this research.

This idea is suitable for this project due to the relation to social psychology. This will help me to show my understanding by the approach, ideas and data research I will be showing in this proposal.

Background of the Study

According to the government, education may be the element that will save the Pakistan nuclear annihilation (Moore & Dunn, 2001, 52). Michael Barber will be part of a committee appointed to implement changes on a large scale, the school system of the country. "Pakistan has gone through hard times," he told the Tes before leaving, "and is still a fragile country, with major security threats.... If the education system fails for another ten or twenty ' years, the country is likely to go to hell. An educated Pakistan, however, could become a thriving democracy, …." (Morris, 1990, 6).
