Why Smoking Should Be Banned

Introduction

According to Dr. Mark Horton, Director of the California Department of Public Health, “Smoking is the leading cause of preventable death”. This fact is more than enough to support the ban on smoking once and for all. Smoking should be banned because it's real cost that smokers as well as non-smokers incur exceeds its perceived benefits. The health risks associated with active and passive smoking are the main reason why people are rallying behind smoking ban in the United States as well as all in other countries where it is legal to smoke publicly. However, effects of tobacco on health and quality of life are too often unknown and must be reminded to make smokers aware of the risks they take and they do take their entourage. The effects of tobacco exercise slyly on most organs, month after month, year after year. Even people smoking a few cigarettes per day or smoking regular cigarettes through 'filter' are not free from adverse effects on their health as well as on the health of people around them who are non-smokers. Secondhand or passive smoking is the third leading cause of preventable death in the United States.” “For every eight smokers that tobacco takes, they take one non-smokers life as well. In the body of this essay, we have discussed the health hazards of smoking on the health and well being of both smokers and people around them who are nonsmokers but vulnerable to those risks due to passive smoking (Fleck & Hanssen, Pp. 60).

Discussion

Smoking can cause diseases that primarily affect the lungs and airways (the tubes that go from the mouth to the lungs). People who smoke often have bronchitis, because the tobacco irritates the airways and causes the secretion of mucus: this is why they cough a lot. The lung is often damaged and more one smoke, the greater the risk of having difficulty breathing properly: it is increasingly difficult to work because it is easier to breath. Smoking can also cause serious diseases such as lung cancer, esophagus (the pipe that goes from the mouth to the stomach), or even the bladder. When people smoke cigarettes, cigars or pipes, it also clogs their arteries (blood vessels that carry blood to the organs), that is to say, they clog more easily. The risk is myocardial infarction: the heart stops because it is not getting enough oxygen to function. There are many health-related reasons to quit smoking, not only the health of smokers, but also for the protection of those around you. The following are the well-known health risks associated with smoking to smokers as well as people around them who despise smoking. By banning smoking in the public places, government can at least decrease the vulnerability of the non-smoking public from developing diseases like Cancer, Cardiovascular diseases and male potency (Rose & Richard, Pp. 25).
