Thesis Statement

The underutilization of women in the workplace continues to adversely affect women's upward mobility.

Introduction

In latest years there has been a drastic boost in the number of women entering and taking part in the labor force (Hepburn & Simon, 2006). Since early annals and the very old civilization of man, women have played a lesser function, in which women were and still are examined as less adequate than a man. A women's traditional function in society is that of lifting children, fulfilling obligations round the dwelling, and being the prime nurturer of the family.

Many women in today's society desire career and a position in this Country. They desire to stand on their own two feet, to become self sustaining individuals and to own the feeling of independence and freedom. Issues that have and still inundated women in the workplace are many. Women in today's workplace face many trials such as discrimination, negative stereotypes of themselves, and sexy harassment. Although women in all careers are faced with these problems, the one thing that is clear is that women are striving to gain equality in the work force today.

Discussion

One of the major matters women must face in the workplace is discrimination. Discrimination is defined as unjust remedy of a individual or group on the cornerstone of prejudice. Discrimination is often deep rooted in one's belief and often very difficult to change. There are two types of discrimination, indirect and direct, each affects women in different ways. Indirect discrimination might be a women being unseen for a promotion. Direct discrimination may encompass a women being discharged from her employment because she is with child or being excluded from after work assembly events.

There are laws such as the federal Civil Rights Act of 1964, Title VII, which prohibits employers from discriminating against job seekers and employees on the basis of race, religion, sex, pregnancy, and national origin, which address direct discrimination. However co workers, employers, and people in general are able to find slight ways of discriminating which makes it very hard to prove. There is furthermore the idea of the glass ceiling that women know-how, often in the corporate world. It is the idea that women can see the higher positions but are not able to obtain them or “climb” the corporate ladder. Men are more likely than women to be promoted to fill these positions.

The next issue women must face is the general stereotype of them. As stated previously, women have taken the role of housewife, mother, and nurturer throughout history. Women have long been stereotyped to stay at home and take care of the house and children. It has been their job to cook the meals, do the laundry, and manage the children's life.
