Introduction

This paper discusses about the challenges women face in acquiring power and influence in corporations. Women mentioned in this article have suffered a lot they reached their position as leaders. Power is the ability which individuals apply, accept and enforce by physical, moral, intellectual or psychological judgments on individuals or groups of individuals (Erdogan, 2010). This power is based on the leaders having control over whatever happens if the team members or subordinates do not work as they are required. The leader can impose a penalty if the followers do not undertake the actions they are supposed to take. Leadership and power are closely related with one another.

Sharon Patrick who is now President And COO Martha Stewart Living faced many hardships while reaching this stage of power. She uses legitimate power to make decisions which are in favor of others. She believes that women have the right to make a decision regarding demands and expect obedience from others. Leaders holding this power are in official position the president; prime minister and monarch have this power. Social hierarchies, cultural norms, and organizational structure all provide the basis for legitimate power. Legitimate power ends at that time till the leader is in that position. This power is effective till then when others believe them as they have the right to control (Glaser, 2006).

Linda Chavez-Thompson, Executive Vice-President, AFL-CIO used coercive power, which influences the, followers to accept that whatever punishment is given by their leader, it is supposed to be correct. It also states that the punishment should be something that the followers will never want to have imposed on them, or the punishment which will not affect the follower at all. It exists when someone has the ability to punish someone mental or psychological, for example, punish a subordinate in front of everyone. This power is based on the leaders having control over whatever happens if the team members or subordinates do not work as they are required.
