Introduction

This paper talks about the effects of suicide and depression in the lives of people. The ideas and facts discussed are supported by the example of “A Rose for Emily”, written by William Faulkner. William Faulkner is one of America's most influential and greater authors and used the consciousness writing style. His famous works show the reflections of his southern upbringing. He wrote numerous novels, as well as, short stories. One of his famous short stories includes "A Rose for Emily". Moreover, William Faulkner focused on crime fiction and mysteries in his work. Another famous author of that time is Charlotte Gilman who also had the same writing style as that of William's. However, he was also criticized because of the image of society that he portrayed. His stories are mainly full of rebellion, oppression, and traditions over the rights of women. He created madcap and down hearted characters in his novels and stories. William Falkner presented the idea of psychological effects that a person can have on his personality when he/she is shielded with any one character strongly during the childhood. He presented the main character of his story, Emily Grierson, as being shielded by her father throughout her life. This makes her to become a change resistant and depressed personality that ultimately lead to her suicide. This example shows the effects of depression that can cause a person committing suicide.

William Faulkner's short story “A Rose for Emily” follows the structure of storytelling by an anonymous narrator. The narrator starts the story by describing the event of Emily's funeral, which was the main character of the story. Faulkner wanted to highlight the mental attitude of Emily, the main character of the novel. Emily feels herself comfortable with living in the past, and not welcoming the present and the change. She lived with her father and was shielded by her father right from her childhood. When her father dies, she shows insanity and does not want to believe the fact that her father is no more there to protect and shield her. This mental attitude of Emily continues till three years, and ultimately she lets the people of the town to bury her father's dead body.
