About Racism in America

Introduction

Racism is a form of internal or external expression about different racial and ethnic groups present in the society. It is an ideology based on myths about different groups and society based on their race, values and inferiority in the society. At many occasions, the belief is that people can be attributed on the basis of characteristics and attributes of their race and groups, which are superior to others. It has been seen, that racism and discrimination, encourages hatred and fear in times of social and economic downturns.

Racism is a phenomenon, which runs globally; it is an invention by the society itself, generating a concept of power and endurance, which activates discrimination and inequality among all human beings. The individuals and societies, who often experience the abuse of racism, feel powerless and frustrated and carry a lack of ability to defend against the masses.

Racism can further be classified as a result of complex individual beliefs, ideologies, shared values and practices, which are articulated in the actions of institutions and individuals, later enhanced by promoting in the principles of popular culture (Frable, 1997, pp. 152)

The fundamentals to racism are that humans can be categorized into several major uniforms of races through generalization of marking superiority and inferiority. This is a socially constructed phenomenon based on misconceptions and further differentiation is usually constructed on the basis of physical appearance, customs, values, religion, languages, culture and more often on world views.

Racism in the United States is a chronic and a pervasive problem that negatively affects individuals, institutions and communities, affecting their favorable functioning and growth in the American society (Pierce, et.al, pp. 282). Racism in America has been portrayed as an expression of controlled institutionalized trends of White power and direct social control serving to subsidiary populace of Color because of their racial group association (Browser, et.al, pp. 138). Despite the tearing down of racist policies, like segregated schooling, and the realization of policies intended at correcting the disorder of ethnic inequities, such as Affirmative Action, racial discrimination continues to contaminate American society, whether as race-based abhorrence crimes (Carter, pp. 546). Social scientists have dedicated a progress of years to value the nature, techniques and possessions of racism. The American system encourages dominance of White Americans in the government structure, judicial systems, and large scale businesses and also in the media, encouraging them with unequal power, dominance and social control, comparative to other race factors.

Racism in America carries further weight, racial profiling is on the verge through actions of brutality against minorities by police, affirmative action, long history of slavery and rising offensive against immigrants. Another factor which increased racial profiling in the U.S is the 9/11 horrific attacks, which increased the security concerns but also increased the fact of discrimination.
