Introduction

A Smartphone is an advanced mobile phone that has many of those functions that are present in a computer, but absent in a regular cell phone. This includes applications (usage, management and virtual memory usage), system software (operating system), and a large screen for ease of use. It extends the communicative features by adding access to emails and chats, which are not offered by traditional cell phones. They differ from sandbox devices in the fact that they can be customized - users can add as well as delete the applications on their Smartphone.

Smart phones have been in high demand since they were first were first introduced. The increase in demand also stems from the fact that they are becoming increasingly affordable, but the major contribution goes to its excelling features: GPS systems, weather reports, office work, encyclopedias and dictionaries, advanced multimedia features such as video calls, audio recording and sharing of pictures as well as audio and video files. The demand for these products is not only generated by the business and premium class customers, but by teens as well. The appeal for this technology is due to the fact that it enables the user to carry all his data with him wherever he goes, to edit it on the go, and share media with others by a single click of a button or tap (in case of a touch phone). These phones enable users to manage whatever work they can within a single device, which is compact and convenient to use. However, Smart phones are very different from the phones that they have evolved from.

Mobile Phone

The first cell phone is said to have been invented by Martin Cooper in 1973, which was priced for $3,995 and had a weight of two pounds. Cooper then came to be known as the father of the cell phone (Cooper, p.n.d.). Cellular phones have come a long way since then.

First generation phones (1G) were based on AMPS (Analog Mobile Phone System) technology. International Roaming was first introduced in 1981 by the NMT (Nordic Mobile Telephone) network in Denmark.

Second generation phones (3G) moved from analog to digital technology and belonged to the 1990s. These were phones that introduced the GSM and CDMA technologies. The first SMS was sent using GSM technology in 1992.
