Introduction

This paper intends to discuss the legalization of active euthanasia. Moreover, arguments against the legalization will also be provided in the paper. The main objective of this paper remains to discuss the concepts of euthanasia in relation to the healthcare ethics and the care of patients. Euthanasia basically refers to the practice of providing an end to someone's life intentionally in order to relieve pain and suffering. Euthanasia is a 'Greek' word having a literal meaning of 'good death' (Cuttini et al. 2004 Pp. 19-24). The purpose of this paper is to analyze the arguments for and against the legalization of euthanasia.

Discussion

Arguments for Legalization

The various issues that surround the concept of end of life are the most debated within the field of medicine. The treatments which are necessary to sustain one's life are important in this respect. Usually, it has been observed that life sustaining treatments are extremely expensive and are not easily affordable for the families. The aspect of the time duration for which such treatments must be withheld is significant to consider. The aspect of medical futility also raises various questions for the field. Doctors generally refuse to treat when they assume that the treatment goals would not be achieved (Thomas & Luis, 2012 Pp. 249-263).

I believe doctors are the most knowledgeable people in relation with the health aspects of their patients. Once, doctors realize that certain patient cannot be treated and all the efforts, time and money being spent on the treatment of such patients are being wasted, the decision of doctors to provide active euthanasia remains a strong one.
