Abstract

Communication and Media today go hand in hand and there is more than just content available for entertainment. The variety of available data is more than a person could for and it is important that young minds be exposed to only select parts of the television. Federal Communications Commission, in the United States is responsible for keeping things running in the proper way and to also make sure that nothing illegal is practiced. Media today as a business is making a lot of profit and there are many pros and cons to doing business in this field.

FCC

FCC is the Federal Communications Commission; a United States Government agency which operated independently. FCC was created by the Congressional statue and most of their commissioners were taken on appointment by the present President. FCC is responsible for working on six areas in the United States, these six areas are: the spectrum, broadband, the media, competition, public safety and the homeland security. FCC is going through the procedure of modernization.

The wired communications regulations were taken over from the Interstate Commerce Commission by the FCC. The authorization command of the FCC covers around fifty states and the District of Columbia and the possessions of the United States. To some extent FCC also provides its cooperation, supervision and leadership for communications bodies around the countries of North America. Regulatory fees funds the FCC completely every year. There are around 1,898 employees which are federal. The 2011 fiscal budget was approximately US$335.8 million while the budget for the year 2012 was US$354.2million.

The 1934 Communications Act records the mission of FCC and was reviewed and revised by the 1996 Telecommunications Act. The mission statement talks about the availability of the network as far as they can possibly go and reach the population of the United States. They believe to treat every American as one without discriminating anyone on the basis of race, color, sex, religion and the nation origin. They believe at providing a rapid, nation-wide, world-wide radio and wire communications efficiently. Their charges are minimal and most reasonable. FCC further claims that it they were created in order to provide national defense and for the mere purpose to promote safety for the life and the property of the Americans by providing radio communications.

The objectives of the Act and the Government Performance and Results Act (GPRA) of the 1993, FCC has recognized six goals in total in their Strategic Plan from 2006-2011. The goals are:

Broadband: the Americans must have access to reliable broadband services which would be affordable for the entire public. The policies of FCC should change regularly and work for the promotion of technology in terms of being neutral and in terms of investments. Moreover, the broadband providers should have incentives of their own for such services and products.
