Introduction

Alfred Adler was born on 7th of February, 1870, in Vienna. He had received his medical degree in the year 1895, and was a well-known psychologist. Alfred was influenced by the philosophy presented by Karl Marx, and he presented his own theories, which contributed in the field of psychology. Alfred had also worked with Sigmund Freud, and had joined his group in the year 1902. Alfred views and theories were compatible with Freud's theories initially, but later his views changed and opposed Freud's ideas. This change was based on his own learning and the way he realized things.

Alfred Adler had joined the “Society of Individual Psychology” in the year 1911, along with nine other psychologists. Alfred Adler presented and supported individual psychology theory. This theory presented a new idea, and it was presented against Freud's theory of psychology. The Individual Psychology theory is a part of psychology and helps people in understanding individuals and their way of thinking. Alfred Adler is considered as the father of Individual Psychology (Schultz, 2005).

Along with his ideas on personality, Alfred Adler has also helped in understanding human psychology and how different factors influence and affect the personality. He has put light on the concept of striving, life style and motivational factors which are associated with human life. He has also helped the psychologists in understanding and dealing with inferiority complex, which is a psychological problem. After understanding and going through the theories presented by Adler, I have learnt many concepts related to psychology.

Thesis Statement

Alfred Adler was a well-known psychologist, who contributed greatly in the field of psychology. He presented the individual psychology theory and his ideas helped in understanding individuals and their development and psychology. He also helped in learning the personality development stages in a different manner, by explaining that how experience shapes personality and life. Understanding personality is one of the most important thing in psychology and Adler and his theories will help me in making my career in psychology.

Overview/Discussion

Alfred Adler presented the Individual Psychology theory in which he presented his view points on individual development and psychology. His theory was a reflection of what he had learned in his own life, and what he had experienced in life educational and personal life. Alfred had explained different aspects of personality in Individual Psychology, and had used these aspects to present his ideas. The aspects include striving for perfection, aggression drive, compensation or striving to overcome, masculine protest, and striving for superiority.

The Individual Psychology presents the idea that the behavior of individuals and their experience is based on the motivating force. This motivating force was defined by Alfred as the force for striving for perfection. This is an internal feeling of desire to achieve perfection, to fulfill our potentials, in order to become like our role models. Striving for perfection is similar to the feeling and idea of self-actualization.
