Introduction

Alzheimer's disease is a brain disorder and the most common type of dementia which causes loss of memory. People suffering from this disease are more vulnerable to develop impairment in intellectual activities, as in, reasoning, planning and developing perceptions about something which ultimately leads to a gradual change in behavior and personality. It is a progressive disease and people crossing the age of 70 are more likely to catch it in routine cases. According to current statistics, 60-80 percent of people suffering from dementia has Alzheimer's disease and is the fourth major reason of deaths in the United States (Perel, pp. 59). In addition to this, the likelihood of Alzheimer's occurrence is more in women as compared to men. One major reason used to justify this statement is that the average life of women is longer than men.

Causes of Alzheimer's disease

The exact causes are unknown, but Alzheimer's disease is associated with the destruction of a large number of nerve cells, the lack of substances required for the transmission of nerve impulses, heredity (genetic predisposition), toxic metals poisoning, head trauma , brain tumor, hypothyroidism. The exact cause of this disease has still not been figured out, but as scientists assumes, in some cases, the fault is the viral infection. The essence of the disease lies in the fact that in the brain begins irreversible damage that leads to neuronal death and the relationships between them.

Symptoms of Alzheimer's disease

The disease onset is characterized by problems with memory and attention violation. In humans, there are such features as distraction and forgetfulness; there is perplexity and confusion of the time in the sequence of certain events.
