Amanda Todd's Sexual Abuse Case

Introduction

As the societies are moving towards more independent and more sophisticated forms, certain issues and problems are also being created that have to be addressed properly and resolved in the right manner. With the advances in information and technology, while a number of conveniences have been created and a number of processes have been simplified, a large number of issues have also been created, that are increasing with each passing day. It is eminent to mention here that most of these issues are linked with privacy concerns: the advancements in technology have allowed individuals to invade and interfere in other's privacy without getting traced, and the same issue is causing an immense increase in bullying and harassment of people over the internet. The following paragraphs highlight one of such issues, which is linked to online harassment and eventually caused a teenage girl to lose her life by committing suicide.

A simple look at the case of Amanda Todd might give the impression that it is a case of school bullying and teasing, but a closer look at the events and the deep study of the case reveals that the case is actually linked to online sexual abuse and harassment. It is eminent to mention here that media is known for manipulating and influencing the news item in their own way and in addition, and thus, it did the same in Amanda Todd's case. The case is actually about serious sexual harassment and abuse that has been hidden in the guise of simple bullying and thus the actual causes have been hidden and concealed.

The video prepared by Amanda Todd revealed that her nude photographs were used to sexually harass her and the blackmailer continued to follow her wherever she went. The same photographs became the cause of her bullying at school as well, by other kids, and they continued to make fun of her and underestimate her using different manners (Wolf, 2012). It should be noted that in absence of those pictures, there would have been no reason for anyone to bully her and she would have been able to lead her life in peace, like other normal kids at school.

Amanda Todd was actually harassed by a random abuser online, who took her nude photographs and showed them at every possible occasion, over the internet, thus sexually abusing her and subjecting her to mental torture and pain. Here, the question of privacy concerns over the internet is raised, along with the estimation of extent to which an individual can place impact on the lives of other people. The case reveals the fact that lack of cyber controls and increasing number of cyber problems is causing more and more individuals to fall victim to the issue and thus get subjected to mental stress and exhaustion.
