Introduction

This writing is about nursing process which emphasis on the assessment, diagnosis, and planning of nursing care for culturally diverse individuals across the life span. African American culture is selected for the study. Family structures and hierarchies, attitudes, beliefs, dietary practices will be discussed in this writing.

Family and Community Structure, Hierarchies

African Americans are found to lives in herds or groups. Mostly men are the working people and women are leading the group of people. Women look after their family and kids. They are also responsible for looking after the family. These people live in nucleus family structure where a grandparent is the head of the family and in his or her absence the mother holds the charge of the home (Barbarin, n.d.).

Attitudes and Beliefs about Pregnancy and Childbearing

The attitude of African American about pregnancy and childbearing is not serious. They do not look after the pregnant women and for them childbearing is also not important. Growth and development of their kids are affected and they do not take proper care about their growth. They rarely concentrate on education or development of their kids. This is one of the basic reason due to which the literacy rate of African American is low. This literacy is increasing now days. Now these American African people have started to invest in the growth and development of their child as they are getting literate (Carter & McGoldrick, 1999).

Attitudes and Beliefs about Death and Dying

For African American death is a general thing and if a person dies due to some diseases it is normal for them. Black people death rate is more than normal American. The reason which is defined behind this increased rate of death is that they do not take proper care of themselves and their patients. They believe death is free from race and culture and so it is therefore their attitude never seems to be serious. For many people death is not important but the scenario in which the death occurs (Barbarin, n.d.).

Attitudes and Beliefs about Health

As discussed earlier, black people rarely care about their health. But the trend is now changing. They are now showing a positive attitude towards their diet, food and health. This is the reason behind rising of heroes in African American community. They are now getting aware of the fact that human being is an important species on land and they should honor him. Few decades back these African American were ignored due to their black color. Now their attitude towards health has changed and so do their beliefs (Porter & Villarruel, 1993).

Attitudes and Beliefs about Mental Health

Mental health is now a locus of attention for African American. As the leadership of this ethnic group has developed itself they are now able to focus more on their physical and mental health.
