In the colonial days the regions of North America experienced an unprecedented growth in the eighteenth century. “Our people must at least be doubled every twenty years,” wrote Benjamin Franklin. (Freidel 1974) In 1700 there were 290,000 colonists North of Mexico; fifty years later they had grown to approximately 1.3 million, an average growth rate of about 3 percent. This is an important time in our countries history because good amounts of people are being dispersed about the countryside, leading to new ideas and revelations, as well as exploration. (Dougherty 1962)
