Introduction

We have been aware of the dominance of an American society over the other societies of the world. We know the life style of an American citizen and how it impacts on the lifestyle of other people from different nations of the world. There is no doubt that American lifestyle attracts an individual to itself. This paper shows a comparison of American lifestyle and Saudi lifestyle. This story is about me, when I was a teenager and used to spend all my day watching American movies. And because of that I started to read about their culture and their style of living, and comparing them to ours as a Saudi. I admired their culture, so I tried to learn the English language by watching movies. I found that going to the United States would be a perfect opportunity to know better about them and to gain their culture.

Discussion

After graduation from the high school, I decided to study in the U.S., and to get the bachelor's degree from there. My parents welcomed the idea and encouraged me to go there, and they knew that I would struggle in adjusting myself into a country that has a different culture and way of living. The families in Saudi Arabia are more family oriented, whereas the families in the United Sates are more focused on the individuals.

When I first arrived in California I was very excited, and I couldn't imagine myself being in the place that I was dreaming to stay in. I stayed in a home stay in San Diego when I was studying English at that time. They were a family that consists of parents and their 10-year old daughter. They were very nice to me and treated me like I was their son, though I belong to a different country. However, it wasn't easy for me to adapt myself there because of the differences in their culture and way of living. I compared between their lifestyle and my family's, and I found that most of the things were not the same.

In Saudi Arabia the father must take care of his children until they get married. And he has to afford for them a place for living, which is usually the same house. Even if the son or the daughter were working and have salaries, they still have the right to stay in their parents' home as long as they are not married. Also, the father is the one that has to cover all the tuitions for school and college for his children if it needed.

Most of the families in Saudi Arabia live in big houses that have so many rooms and large yards. Even the people, who live in low-income houses, care about the size of their house.
