Chapter One

Introduction

According to US Census Bureau, approximately 58 million students complete their studies in United States of America annually. Out of which, 16.2 million students are identified as the students of grade eight through twelfth. Moreover, there were around 3 million teachers appointed in elementary and high school system, in the year 2009 (US Census Bureau, 2011).

Education system is forced to place higher demands on the achievement for all students because national academic standards are continuously modifying. A teacher should change his instructional and technological skills according to the alteration in the education environment. Moreover, administrators should support the concept of using technology in their institutions. Unfortunately, majority of the teachers and administrators are not accepting these changes.

According to PIALP, around 87% of students between the ages of 12 and 17 years use the internet in United States of America. Of this population, about 70% of children use internet as the primary source for information (Lenhart, Madden, & Hitlin, 2005). The use of technology will directly create an impact over education and career. That's why; it has now become one of the most essential tools in our schools to reach a large percentage of Net Generation students.

Problem Statement

Educational standards are designed to advance the academic development and achievement of every student by explaining them about the knowledge and skills. A student should attain these knowledge and skills for each grade level. However, the teachers are not accepting the use of technologies to educate students.

Background of the Problem

Evidence of the Problem

National education technology standards are developing due to the importance of technology. New Jersey Department of Education adopted two standards from National technology, which encompass a global perspective on technology, in 2009. These standards include “Education technology” and “Technology education, engineering and design”.

According to the education technology, the students will make use of digital tools to administer, assess and generate information. This will be done to solve problems individually or in a group. According to the “technology education, engineering and design”, the student will build up an understanding of the environment. He will also understand the impact of technology, design and engineering over the designed world (New Jersey Department of Education, 2010).

High level teachers of All Boys Private Catholic High-School in Boston were widely affected by the increased use of technology across all areas of instruction. This was happened because of the adaptation of updated technology standards, which were picked from national standards. Although, students and teachers believe that technology has an impact on education and career, but a number of teachers lack access to crucial technological resources (Hart, Allensworth, Lauen, & Gladden, 2002).
