CHAPTER 03: METHODOLOGY

Overview

The aim of any research is to contribute to the pool of knowledge that exists in the world. It is important to keep in mind that the intention of research is to expand the boundary of our knowledge by making a systematic and scientific investigation into the unknown. Although research can take many forms; it can be narrowed down to two fundamental categories on the basis of its need. The most common and academically important is the basic research which is done for the sole purpose of adding knowledge. Here is it essential to remember that basic research is conducted for the sake of gaining knowledge and filling a gap or vacuum in the world of knowledge. The finding of the research may not necessary be applicable to an existing problem at once, but may be useful later on, or may contribute to better research in the future.

On the other hand, the second type of research is called applied research and is typically done to solve a specific problem. Such researches are usually performed by companies to solve a corporate problem, hence they are used immediately. A company may conduct a research to identify the behaviour of a certain market segment to evaluate the possible acceptability of their new product. It is essential to keep in mind, that a research conducted in general to identify the consumer behaviour for some generic products, or an industry can be classified as basic (academic) research as the findings are not important for some one specific company, but contribute to all relevant or concerned bodies. Keeping this in mind, the research conducted here is a basic research that aims at generating knowledge that can be useful to a large segment of readers.
