Discussion

Modern architecture

Modern architecture is one of the famous and most practiced genres of the 20th century. Modern architecture is basically associated with principle “form follows function” that is sketched by a known architect Luis Sullivan. It can be simplified as the form or the shape of the building should essentially be based up on function it purpose. This statement is implemented as the battle cry of the modern architect when expressionism was running on the field.

The decorative element or the ornamentation is considered as the alien for the modern architecture. It is followed by used of simple and straight lines, simple geometric forms and function as the core important factor of the building.

It emphasis horizontal and vertical lines, flat roofs, horizontal planes, honest of materials, a relationship between inside and outside, use of glass and natural light.

Post modernism in architecture

Postmodernism was a reaction to the modern style architecture. Was based on the principle that propagates that the function follows form:. Simplifying the statement, it states that the function of a building are followed by the form as the architecture the language of aesthetics so the form or the appearance should a priority for an architect in order to construct a building. Post modernisms can also be defined as “neo-eclectic' that states that the ornamentation has been returned to the building in this movement. The characteristics of the post-modern architecture include sculpture forms, anthropomorphism and ornamentations.

In order to implicate a meaning, the conceptual and physical characteristics are combined. These characteristics of meaning include pluralism, double coding, flying buttresses and high ceilings, irony and paradox, and contextualism.

This is not necessary that the sculptural form in post modern building should be essential an organic. They are not as rigid as the modern ones. The form are sculptural but still were really playful. The parts of the building are but together in an organic way. These forms are not reduced to an absolute minimum; they are built and shaped for their own sake.

With its sensitivity to the building's context, did not exclude the needs of humans from the building.

Modernism lasted for really long. So after a great period of time Frank Gehry's Venice Beach house appeared on the canvas in 1986 with little amount of ornamentation still considered of no use and no need for modernism.
