Approach to Discourse (Conversation Analysis)

Introduction

Conversation analysis has been inspired by ethnomethodology. Conversation analysis along with the discourse analysis is commonly taken to be the self-sufficient approaches that are conducive in understanding the world of socializing. They have a significant importance and cannot be merely taken to be combined with other approaches (Edwards, 1995, pp 582).

Conversation analysis has started having an important record not just with regard to the understanding of any sort of interactions but also for viewing ways of how it could be altered or changed. This paper will attempt to collect the truth through convseration analysis in the transcript involving Marlon Brando's interview. Through the interview, an insight into the private life of Marlon and what he has desired can be easily discerned. It can also be easily recognized as to what happens to be his true inner fear. This fear, it can be learn as we read through his transcript is not manifesting itself explicitly, but is becoming apparent indirectly in the shape of worries that Marlon feels at not having been able to try out something new or whenever he realizes that he has failed to experience something. This wory is a reminder to him that his life has to come to an end, and because of this he cannot experience each and everything he wants to. This makes him worry, but in reality it is not his worry, but it is his fear which his mind is hiding from him.

If viewed from the point of view of conversation analysis, the structure of sequence provides an environment that is natural for any sort of interaction. In order to understand this idea clearly, it needs to be observed that the participants are relying on the placement of words in the conversation that would prove to be a source for understranding and apprehending of what is the truth and reality about what is being talked about. The two things of action and talk are closely tied to the ocurance of these two things (Edwards, 1995, pp 585).

Therefore, it becomes important that these views be taken into account when the transcript of Marlon is being heard or read. We would need to rely more on his placement of words in the ensuing conversation. This would then be the source through which an understanding can be reached as to what the reality and truth is all about.

It is evident from the interview that Marlon Brando is no longer perturbed at growing up. This change in him has come as he slowly matured into a grown man. Marlon answering that he would no longer be concerned at being sixty-five is suggestive that Marlon is trying to account for his past mislead beliefs. The verbal categories in the conversation go on to make sense as the conversation enteretd by Marlon has been triggered by past experience. This is perceptual-cognitive theory. It is a common one in both social psychology and cognitive ...
