Argument & Persuasion on the War on Terrorism in Afghanistan

Introduction

Many would argue that the events that took place on the 11th of September go back to the late 1970s, when the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan. It is often believed that this was the time that the framed extremist ideologies and further rooted hatred towards foreigners. Its King was overthrown by an individual who had a soft spot for the Soviets. The Soviets were overthrown by Mujahidin, aided and backed by Pakistan and the United States. Later, the Mujahidin were overthrown by the United States and was replaced by Karzai, an individual often thought to be biased towards the American agenda, a puppet. The Afghans have been through a lot. The fact that American troops have quite literally settled in, carpet bombed the entire country and labeled any man with a beard as a terrorist is too much for any civilized country. Add to this the fact that millions of Afghans have died in the process, is it not about time that America pull out of the region and leave the Afghans to run their country by themselves?

With every fallen bomb and every soldier killed on Afghan soil, the entire world is made to believe that this is not suffering; that if any pain is endured, it is ensuring a better tomorrow for the entire world (Rogers, 2011). I find this concept to be rather contrary to itself. What gives the United States the right to invade another nation? What gives the United States the right to invade another nation despite the fact that United Nations had strictly told the United Nations not to? On the one hand, America takes decisions of whether or not another nation is justified in invading its neighbor. This can be seen when Saddam invade Iraq or how China has fought for Tibet. Amazingly, such caution and international policy was disregarded when American intelligence was led to believe that Osama Bin Laden, the American enemy number one, was hiding in Afghanistan.

Believers in the war on terror state that somebody had to stand up, and that somebody was the Untied States of America. I ask if it truly was a wise decision. In addition to the millions of innocent lives that were lost in the effort to put an end to terrorism, hundreds of thousands of soldiers lost their lives and trillions ...
