RNA interference was discovered by chance in 1990, Jorgensen and colleagues attempted to reinforce the color purple petunias by introducing a vector encoding a pigment in the plant. Surprisingly, some petunias became partially or completely white, the gene introduced putting out the natural gene. In 1994, Wassenegger showed that the introduction of double-stranded RNA in cells of Arabidopsis thaliana triggers a corresponding DNA methylation. This mechanism was originally known as transcriptional gene silencing (TGS).
