Article Analysis: Should Elders Drive after a Certain Age

Article # 1

The first article that we are going to analyze is named as Identification and Comparision of Crash Risk of Old Drivers written in 2006 by Surapaneni Vamsi. K. Author has effectively and very closely reviewed and related the literature to previous studies. He has reviewed several studies identifying risk factors for traffic crash involvement among old drivers. After reviewing previous researchers he stated that most of studies have focused in functional impairments and chronic medical conditions of old drivers. In literature of this study he has summarized the findings from previous studies on safety of older drivers. He has also addressed methods of estimating measures of exposure like passenger miles of travel and vehicle miles of travel. Moreover he has focused on intersection specific driving errors, functional impairments, and medical conditions. The review of the research is not somewhere in the middle as the study was conducted in 2006 therefore he has some current studies and some old studies. The author has used very good references and in my opinion he has not left any outstanding references which could have been used in this study.

The objective of the study was to identify risk factors for drivers aging greater than 65 years also known as older drivers involved in motor vehicle crashes and to compare those risk factors with drivers of other age group, the purpose was clearly stated in the study. The purpose of the study was clearly understood since it was efficiently written in simple language and was included in the introduction part; its purpose was to help other in better understanding the causes of crashed among old drivers (over 75 and in between age group of 65 to 74) (Vamsi, 2006). The author in this study did not generate hypothesis therefore they were not mentioned in the study. The independent and dependent variable were not clearly defined in the study neither there was any clear definition and description of complete variables was provided by the researcher. However the way this study conducted was clearly mentioned by the author. Statistical and descriptive analysis was used to compare crash risks among various age groups. One way ANOVA was used for Statistical analysis and Kruskal-Wallis test was used to compare crash rates across age groups. The data was collected from Clark Country, Nevada (Vamsi, 2006).

The author has generated results on crash rates based on passengers miles of travel, vehicles miles of travel and on 1000 population. The subjects analyzed in this study was quite similar to other studies such factors like collision type road class, functional class, and crash severity were same factors used in other studies. The results of the study were highly related to the literature review. Author after reviewing the literature and results stated that old drivers particularly over the age of 75 years have high rate and percentage of fatal crashed when compared to young group ...
