Summary

Family violence (FV), spirituality and social support are highlighted psychosocial determinants of health. FV is associated with poor health among older African American women. The effect of spirituality and social support levels on the health of African American women is unknown. (Paranjape 2009: 171) To evaluate the role of spirituality and social support as determinants of the cultural relevance of health status for older women of African American independent FV levels, we used a cross-sectional study. Spearman correlation coefficients estimated to assess associations between lifetime exposure FV, spirituality, social support, and health status outcomes and multivariate regression models were used to examine the independent effect of spirituality and social support on the state of physical and mental health, control of FV and significant demographic variables. The average age of participants was 63.9 years. The highest levels were significantly associated spirituality with better physical health status after adjusting the levels of FV and factors. Similarly demographics, higher levels of spirituality and social support both significantly correlated with better mental health in the multivariate model that controls the levels of FV life and demographic factors. Spirituality and social support are two potentially modifiable determinants of health for older African American women.

Critique on the Implications

Family violence is the most popular violent crime in America. According to physical violence in American families, just over 16%, or one in six American couples experienced an incident of physical assault in 1985. “Although alcohol is not necessarily involved in all domestic violence cases, any police officer, ambulance driver or medical emergency room will tell you that are involved in a large percentage of these crimes and certainly in the incidents violent. (Buzawa 2002) The family is a system, which means that violence in any part of the family is equal to the violence everywhere. Woman abuse is a primary indicator of child abuse and vice versa.

Critique on Results and Discussion

This system of violence in the family is so precise that the family dog tied in the yard and abuse indicates that within the family house is being battered, too. Most people working with children of alcoholics are very aware that these children often suffer from physical violence against them by a drunken father. I cannot understand is that these kids probably are more often due to abuse of their mothers because of abuse against women is even more common than child abuse. (Grossi, 2011)

The new method of teaching, 29 adapted for informed consent, was used to determine the capacity, the examiner evaluates the ability of participants to repeat the reasons and context of the study and the implications of participation. All participants were offered or $ 10 or $ 20 at the end of the interview. The incentive amount was determined by study site to maintain consistency with regard to incentives for research with the participation of other ongoing projects in the study sites.
