Introduction

Tate and Lyle involves wide spectrum of the supply chain requirements. The company is the sugar giant and therefore very carefully organizes the warehousing facilities and supply chain. However the questions are why the company cannot avoid the use of the warehousing facilities and what environment friendly manners can be adopted so that the warehousing process includes managing the associated transport. This paper is going to discuss the supply chain strategies of the company and the significant of managing the warehousing facilities so that the sugarcane shipments are safely navigates through river Thames.

Discussion

The company was formed in 1921 by the merger of two sugar refineries competing, Henry Tate & Sons and Abram Lyle & Sons. Henry Tate had founded his company in 1869 in Liverpool, before extending it to Silvertown, a district of East London; the fortune he amassed enables it to found in 1897 the Tate Gallery. Abram Lyle, cooper and ship-owner, had received shares of a sugar refinery in 1865 in Greenock, Scotland, which develops in the London Borough of Plaistow, Silver town neighbour (Tate Lyle,,2010).

The cooper and ship-owner Abram Lyle acquired in 1865 in Greenock, and then in Plaistow knowledge of the sugar refining process. Henry Tate (1819-1899) began his business in 1869 in Liverpool, and expanded later to London. His industrial fortune he used to in 1897 in London, the Tate Gallery to start. Both companies had large refinery in Silver town, to their company in 1921 under the name of Tate & Lyle plc, leading to fusion (Tate Lyle,,2010).

The company is based in the UK known for their refined cane sugar products, especially for the brand "Lyle's Golden Syrup." This brand is the symbol of a lion and a swarm of bees known - in allusion to a biblical story of Samson. In 1949, the company was known by the brand name, Mr. Cube, as part of a marketing campaign. The dark cane syrup for Lyle called Black Treacle and is very intense flavour; it is required for numerous original English recipes. Tate & Lyle is the sole manufacturer of sucralose as a sugar substitutes that of PepsiCo, General Mills, Unilever and other companies use (Bowersox,Closs,2007,25-36).

For Tate and Lyle, Supply chain management involves reducing the cost and ensuring that all the stages of operations for example, transportation involves the full capacity with the unnecessary risks. The company is well aware that the leaders in sugar industry are expanding their ideas of supply chain to collaborate the efforts to diversify the natural resources and production for the benefit of all the stakeholders. The company recognizes that the stakeholder in the industry need consumer and shareholder's confidence, and community support in the management practices (Coyle,2011,9-11).
