Personal Learning Style

Peter Honey and Alan Mumford developed the learning styles based on Kolb's work, and they identified four different learning preferences or styles: Activist, Theorist; Pragmatist and Reflector. Activists are enthusiastic regarding new ideas and they try to get involved in new experiences. Reflectors like to observe the situation from different prospects. Theorists like to settle in and combine observation into logically sound and complex theories. Pragmatists are willing to try things out (Honey & Mumford, 1982). I filled out a survey, and the survey results showed that I am an activist.

For my students, I always preferred learning. As observed by Stephen Brookfield (1983) the term 'experiential learning' is being used with two connotations. On the one hand, it is used to describe the learning where a student acquires and applies knowledge, skills and feelings in an immediate and relevant setting. It thus involves a 'direct encounter with the phenomena being studied rather than merely thinking about the encounter, or only considering the possibility of doing something about it” (Brookfield, 1983).

Reflection

For individuals who have had the opportunity of teaching as an assistant teacher, I believe behaviour management of students is a bigger challenge (Cottrell, 2008, pp.90). First of all, the environment is very much open, and students do not accept you in the absence of their primary teacher, which can be an intimidating element for teachers like me. The second thing is that class processes and activities are often very noisy and require those teachers that know how to manage these types of behaviours of students. The third thing is that, activities of classroom activities often drag students to a self-awareness level that they mostly do not experience, and this can make a lot of students uncomfortable.

As an assistant teacher, the additional challenge for me is to cover the class when needed. This has been challenging for me as each subject is only time-tabled one double-period for every class per week, and I am expected to examine every condition at least twice during a semester. When the factors of teachers in the periods that is lost because of absences, school events, public holidays, or excursions, in the end I left with about 16 double-periods per class per semester. In addition, assessments must be carried out before writing reports, which means that during the seven and eight weeks of the term. Thus, I often get this feel that I am chasing to teach skills and content.

In my teaching experience as an assistant teacher, I have learnt to create and adapt different classroom procedures and rules in order to make behaviour management and classroom environment much more manageable. I have learnt to make easy to remember and simple rules. I have read somewhere that rules must not be less than ten. I have come to understand that it is the responsibility of a teacher to tell students what not to do and what to do, so rather than asking them not to punch, ...
