Introduction

The subject of this assignment is Bend it like Beckham movie, which was released in he year 2002. It was basically a comedy drama movie that was firstly shown in United Kingdom. The movie was directed by Gurinder Chadha. The title of movie is inspired by the famous football player David Beckham, who is considered as one of the most skillful player and has this excellent ability to win as a result of free kicks. The movie revolves around the central character named Jess, who belongs to an Indian family and has all the skills to play football well. But on the contrary, her family is very much narrow minded that is why she plays often with her English friends in parks secretively along with other boys (IMDb, 2002).

Discussion

Jess is offered to play foot ball once by the character of Jules who later becomes her best friend, to play in local team. However, during the team travel both girls become interested in one guy named Joe and their friendship is badly affected by this truth. On the other hand, Jules' parents misperceive the situation and suspects of both girls being engaged in Lesbian relationship. Thus they always try to get Jess out of the team. Whereas, Jess family is busy in wedding arrangements of their older daughter picky. The basic reason behind Jess family's being opposed of jess playing football was the old memories and difficulties faced by her father as a result of racism and discrimination when he used to play cricket (IMDb, 2002).

However, both the girls win and are offered scholarship. Later Jules mother offended Jess of being hypocrite and lesbian. Jess and Joe together strives to convince Jess parents' for accepting this scholarship and they succeeded after all.

Role of Gender

The movie exhibits numerous themes and ideas which also includes role of gender particularly woman that is significantly expressed by the central characters of the movie i.e. Jess and her friend Jules. There are two generation shown showed in the movie, one is older generation and other is younger one. Both Hindus and British have some common and different characteristics and point of views. Older generation such as Jules and Jess's family is shown as very much concerned about their daughters' activities and personal life. Like Jess is being always given a lecture by her mother to adapt traditional norms and learn making traditional Indian meal and wear traditional clothes. Her parents' are also showed as arguing with Jess on wearing shorts while playing football and they consider it unethical and sinful act in the eyes of religion and morality. Similarly, dissimilar point of views is also expressed by Jules who is a British girl when her mother scolds or resists her from buying football related undergarments. In addition, her mother also seems to hold opposing point of views pertaining to the Lesbian relationship.
