Child and Adolescent Bipolar Disorder

Child and Adolescent Bipolar Disorder

Introduction

Bipolar disorder is particularly common in the general population. It seems that it affects a percentage ranging from 0.4% to 1.5% of the population. Nevertheless, it is a serious and disabling disorder that deserves some attention. Sufferers of this condition tend to have depressive phases followed by manic phases. The depressive phases are characterized by a particularly low mood, a marked and profound sadness and the sense that there is nothing that can give pleasure. Also, during these stages, sleep can easily increase or decrease, as the appetite; focus on a task becomes more difficult. Sometimes the despair and emptiness are so marked that people want to commit suicide.

Discussion & Analyses

The manic phases, in some cases, are exactly the opposite of depressive phases. They are characterized, in fact, a high mood, the feeling that everything is possible and excessive optimism. The ideas and thoughts in the mind quickly pile up and sometimes become so fast that it often becomes difficult to follow. The behavior becomes disorganized and ineffectual. The energy is so great that often those who pass through these stages does not feel the need to eat or sleep and the feeling of being able to do anything, to the point of committing impulsive actions or compromising, such as reckless spending spree, or business.

In other cases, however, the manic phase is characterized by euphoric mood, but dysphoric, or by a constant sense of angry and injustice, intolerance, irritability, and, often, real aggressive, lacking the ability to adequately assess the consequences for their actions (Morriss & Masto, 2005). The phases tend to last more depressive than wild ones: the first usually lasts from several weeks to several months, while the second one to two weeks. Sometimes the transition from one phase to another is immediate, sometimes, however, a lag period of ornery mood. Typically a phase occurs slowly, and sometimes it can come suddenly.
