Boot Camps and Juveniles

Introduction

Boots Camps are designed similarly to military primary training centers. Juvenile boot camps became enormously popular during the 1980s, despite their lack of a clearly articulated theoretical model. The general idea was that strict physical regimens and a confrontational approach would “shock” participants into better behavior. Another major goal of boot camps was to divert less serious offenders from traditional incarceration and offer them the possibility of a shorter sentence, thus freeing up more expensive prison beds and reducing overall correctional costs (Becker, 1960).

The first juvenile boot camp was opened in Louisiana in 1985, and by 1995, there were 30 state-operated boot camps for juveniles as well as 18 county-operated and some privately operated programs. Despite their popularity, boot camps have been criticized for expanding correctional populations (net-widening). Boot Camps have been exposing participants to potential abuse. In general, evaluations of adult and juvenile boot camps have not found evidence that they reduce recidivism compared to traditional incarceration. Many evaluations have reported, however, that boot camps have positive impacts on participants' attitudes and are effective at delivering educational and treatment services (Cairns, 1994).

The current study attempted to review all existing evaluations of boot camp programs that served juvenile offenders. The purpose of these evaluations was to see whether these programs were meeting their stated goals of reducing recidivism and freeing up correctional bed space.

Discussion

The young generation is the essential asset of a state. The wishes and hopes of a nation can be only consummated, if the young people are treated well. The juvenile needs to be enough capable and strengthen in order to accomplish the dreams and in the hope of earning most excellent.

Juvenile encompass aggression, require liberty, flexibility, self control, rules and also value to relations to instill, argue and esteem of others. Although frequent no. of this juvenile are imprisoned for their offense, which the regulation permit, they are so straight forward victim of homosexual rape and other kind of aggression at the hand of hard-bitten adult criminals.

Today every state is being engaged in treatment of the younger lad, for this purpose they have established courts to maintain law and order. And in the 1899 the U.S.A., forming to the past legal premises opened the world's first juvenile court in Chicago. The individual under the age of 18 years is considered as juvenile under the US law (Farrington, 1990). There were two basic agendas on which the court was functioning (Capaldi & Patterson, 1996).

First, juvenile not have the maturity to take responsibility for their actions in the means adults could.

Second, their characters not completely built, they could be rehabilitated extra successfully than adult criminals. For several years these two basics were the benchmark of juvenile justice court in U.S.A

In current time period, though a rising number of juvenile criminals are being tried as adults much the way they might have been before the advent of juvenile courts. In part this stems from public indignation against children who, in growing ...
