CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION

Outline of the Study

This study explains breast cancer's perceptions, attitudes, awareness and knowledge amongst different ethnic groups. The study comprises the following sections:

Chapter 1 is an introductory chapter presenting the background of this study, main goals, purpose of the study and research questions.

Chapter 2 is a relevant literature review in the study area, highlighting the previous research carried out in this field.

Chapter 3 presents an overview of research methodology chosen for this study. Research design, the data collection method, samples, sampling method, research instrument, validity, reliability, and the ethical concerns are presented in this chapter.

Chapter 4 presents the analysis of findings and discussion of the detailed study.

Chapter 5 concludes the dissertation, providing implications and useful recommendations for further research.

Background of the Study

Breast cancer is one of the cancer tumours that are known since ancient times. Breast cancer is the most common oncological disease and the leading cause of death among women in most countries (Zaridze, 2002, p. 36). The continuous growth of the disease and mortality due to cancer localization leads to more detailed studies of the problem. Today, there are quite large variations of breast cancer incidence in different countries depending on the action of natural and climatic conditions of the place of residence and ethnic composition of national peculiarities lifestyle combined with genetic characteristics of inheritance tendency to cancer. On this basis, depending on the level of disease in different countries have developed prevention and early detection of disease. However, it did not eliminate the causes of growth and the outcomes remain poor, and cause highest death rate from breast cancer. As a result of increasing rate of breast cancer, studies in recent decades appeared about ethnic differences in the incidence, clinical presentation and the results of treatment of breast cancer among women of different ethnic groups belonging to different regions of the world.
