Introduction

The main purpose of this paper is to analyze the “Breast-Giver” written by Mahasveta Devi. Breast-giver is a story which is based on the Indian culture. The story can be very best understood by an Indian and relate it to the Indian culture. The story is mainly focused on the men as the Holy child and the women as the Divine mother.

Discussion

In the story “Breast-Giver”, Mahasveta have described women as mothers and the one who brings extension in the husband's family. Though, it is the biggest depiction of Indian culture as in India the women are supposed to be the house wives and take care of their children, parents and elder relatives. Thus, this is the main phenomenon which is discussed by Mahasveta in this story. She has depicted women as the one who stays home and take care of the family (Bressler, 90).

According to the beliefs of class, Jashoda had not been encouraged in her profession and people exploited her because she was a woman. The story also depicted that the people of Haldar family were mainly taking the benefits of Jashoda's body. Though, it can be expected that the main reason behind Jashoda's exploitation was his class structure. Up to a certain extent it can be said that Haldar was mainly taking benefit of Jashoda's body, but her later profession has been considered as the positive milestone in the life of Jashoda. The story describes the female body as the reproductive system and it is useful for providing the nurtures and rear children. Mahasveta has described woman as the one who raise the class structure has the power to bring changes in the life. The culture and religion can be the best representation of the Jashoda's profession in a positive manner (Tyson, 83). Mahasveta wanted to be midwife in her life. In the start, the interpretation of the dream can be considered to be a confusing aspect; however, the profession of Jashoda has been accepted as the noble when she has accepted the profession at Haldar Household. The author has discussed the different essence of spiritual connections, astrology, and dreams of gods and goddesses which are the serious factors in the culture of India. Therefore, the Jashoda's dream as the midwife is considered to be a noble profession of Jashoda. The author has described in the story that Lionseated has come to the dream of Jashoda and appeared to Jashoda that she should serve as the midwife which is a very noble profession. The appearance of Lionseated in the dream of jashoda is a very positive sign that now no one can rule Jashoda and she cannot be used by other people for the wrong acts just because she is a woman. The act of widwifery is considered to be a fate which the God has chosen for her.
