Introduction

In the 1960s a phenomenon known as the British invasion took place in the arts industry of USA. The invasion was mainly dominated by the musical section of the young British musical bands. The musical invasion was primarily dependent upon two genre of music the pop and rock and roll music a heritage of black Americans and the other genre was the influence of black Americans rhythm and blues. Both the music forms were originated from American culture but their impact was lost in the later 1950s and early 1960s until it was revived by British musicians on the American charts.

The emergence of British artists lead by Beatles and their success followed by the rolling stones was highly accepted by the American population. It was accepted because their culture was presented in a very interesting manner by foreigners who were actually connected to the Americans. The Beatles, the rolling stones and other British performing artists quickly captured the markets of United States of America. They became youth icons, their culture was adopted, they became trend setters, and people in America started dressing the way they did. Their hairstyles were copied, many new musical bands imitated their accent to adopt their way of singing and largely they brought back what was lost during the 1950s and early 1960s. They brought back the rock and roll; they brought back the rhythm and blues. They influenced the emerging musicians of America to further reinvent other forms of rock music (West, 2011).

Rock music

The rock music is originated from mainly from popular music form. It comprises influence from multiple music genres varying from pop music, rhythm and blues, jazz and classical. Rock music mainly comprises of an electric guitar and drum. The lyrics of rock music in similarity to pop music are used to express love but can be used for variety of subjects like anger, politics, sadness and social issues. The other instruments used to assist the bass guitar in rock music are piano, Hammond Organ and synthesizers.

The rock music of sixties find its roots from the period before world war 2, when artists such as Benny Goodman, Count Basie, Glenn Miller, Duke Ellington, Jimmy and Tommy Dorsey's band played the rock and roll music and used the beats at background for their dance performances. Les Paul designed the electric guitar to influence the role of a single artist in multiple domains while recording. The electric guitar became the symbol of rock music.

The loud tone of American rock and roll music influenced the British youth in late 1950s. It was not until 1960s that the rock music got popular. The origins were largely influenced by rock and roll music and youth bands such as The Beatles, the Who, The Zombies and The Hollies emerged not only on the British charts but mostly, dominated the US charts and Billboard.
