Introduction

Nigerian Breweries Plc was incorporated in 1946, as a largest and pioneer brewing company in Nigeria. STAR Lager was the first bottle of beer that was produced by Nigerian Breweries Plc, which rolled off the entire bottling lines of Lagos Brewery in June 1949. There were several other breweries, which were commissioned by the company including Aba Brewery that was established in 1957. Nigerian Breweries Plc was a joint venture among the United African Company International (based in United Kingdom) and Heineken (Holland). The second largest brewery that is functioning in Nigeria is Ama Brewery, which is also having distinctive position in the marketplace (Uwuigbe & Uadiale, 2011, p.258).

Today, the company is having a portfolio of highly quality brands that includes Gulder Lager Beer, Star Lager Beer and Maltina. Maltina is having three varieties that include Maltina with Pineapple, Maltina Straberry, Maltina Classic and Maltina Sip-it. All these brewery products are packaged in Tetrapaks for maintaining effective quality and preserving it for a longer period of time. For gaining attention of the market Nigerian Breweries Plc re-launched its product “Heineken Lager” in the Nigerian market in June 1998.

The company is having effective position in the Nigerian Stock Exchange, which is mainly due to its effective productivity and profitability in the marketplace. It was the first company that attained N12 billion profit before tax in the Nigerian history and it sanctioned an amount of N8 billion as dividend to its shareholders (Uwuigbe, 2011, p.284). Nigerian Breweries is also operating in various brewing related companies that are involved in making corks, bottles, labels and packing crates. The company is having effective logistics network that is supporting its goals and objectives. The retail sales management and warehousing companies are also getting business from the operations of Nigerian Breweries Plc.

Nigerian Breweries Plc. has faced extreme competition from its competitors, as it was able to capture the larger portion of the marketplace by executing effective business strategies. The organisations that are not having effective strategic management skills are unable to manage the organisational goals and objectives in an effective way (Uwuigbe & Uadiale, 2011, p.258). The management of Nigerian Breweries Plc is based on strategic people who have all those capabilities and skills that are required in managing the organisational goals and objectives in an effective way.
